The Benefits of Regular Dog Walking
Reining Cats and Dogs Pet Sitting
Whether large or small, your dog will benefit in many ways with regular dog walks. Regular exercise for
your dog is crucial to a long healthy and happy life. Walking is a great form of exercise that improves blood
flow, builds strong muscles, increase joint mobility, and helps control weight. But exercise is not the only
thing your dog will get out of regular dog walks.

By establishing a regular dog walking routine, your dog gets the chance to channel their energy in a very
positive way. Dogs build up energy every day that needs to be expended. Dog walking helps to burn off
this energy keeping the dog calm and happy. When dogs do not have the outlet for this energy, it often
results in destructive behavior.

Walking also aids greatly in the training of your dog. Draining energy results in a calmer, more submissive
dog who is much more likely to focus on you and your trainer.  The walk is also a great venue to reinforce
obedient commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” and “come.”

Dogs have natural roaming and exploring instincts. On a dog walk, dogs are “working” which results in a
feeling of purpose beyond just sitting and sleeping all day. Regular dog walks can help prevent your dogs
desire to run away or bolt out the door in an attempt to fulfill that roaming desire.

In addition to the physical stimulation, dog walking also provides mental stimulation as well. Having the
opportunity to explore their surroundings with their senses is an instinctual activity for dogs. During the
course of a walk, your dog will be exposed to all sorts of smells, sights, and sounds, which acts as a mental
workout for the brain.

The social interaction obtained in a regular dog walking routine also helps satisfy the “pack animal need”
the dogs are born with. Encountering other people, children, and other dogs will help build confidence and
social skills.

Dogs are social beings that crave our attention. Walking them provides that attention and interaction as
well as exposes them to so much the world has to offer. A regularly walked dog will become more
comfortable around a variety of things such as bicycles, skateboards, traffic noises, loud trucks, mailmen,
etc.

In summary, a regular dog walking routine can result in a happy, healthy, confident and calm dog who is
much less likely to exhibit behavior problems and is much easier to train. A dog who is not walked often
can become anxious, bored, nervous, or destructive. So put forth the effort to put your best friend on a
leash and let him explore the great outdoors and everything the world has to offer.
